The changes we have made include;

• Full upgrade of our Reference Station software
• The SmartFIX website

These changes significantly enhance SmartFIX and demonstrate Global Survey’s commitment to the network and to our growing user group. You will see enhanced coverage both from single sites and for networked regions, improved reliability and security, and greater uptime through the full integration of Glonass data streams.

No More PPM errors…Network RTK eliminates the distance-dependent errors that plague conventional internet base stations. Traditionally, every km from the base adds another 1mm to the rover position error. Network RTK gives you consistent RTK accuracy throughout the network.

No radio coverage restrictions…Traditional GNSS ties you to your base station and limits your effective range to the range of your radios, even if your gear could be operating 50km away. With SmartFIX, if you can get online and are in the network area, you can achieve cm-level accuracy.

SmartFIX is manufacturer-independent… Through Leica’s strong support of industry standards for correction messages, equipment from any GPS supplier can operate within the network.

SmartFIX will be expanding further in coming weeks, so contact us at info@smartfix.co.nz to get a KML showing the network in Google Earth, get on our mailing list and keep up to date with exactly what’s happening with the future of GNSS positioning.

Viva TS12 Robotic

The cost-effective system provides everything needed for efficient daily surveying in one powerful package comprising the Leica Viva TS12 Total Station, the Leica Viva CS10 Controller and the easy-to-use Leica SmartWorx Viva Onboard Software.

Leica Viva TS12 Robotic Total Station

Leica Viva TS12 uses years of experience to optimally find, lock and measure points to prisms with a single key press. Leica releases its brand new technology for bulldozers revolutionizing the way contractors move dirt and fine-grade. The innovative SP technology opens new opportunities for dozers, combining ease-of-use, unrivalled flexibility, and the highest precision at the fastest speeds available in the market. Contractors can now boost their productivity and performance even more while benefiting from new ways to use existing equipment.

Bringing faster results SP technology provides improved hydraulic control that allows faster grading with outstanding smoothness and precision at high speeds, dramatically increasing machine utilization and productivity. Bulldozers can now take on even more fine grading jobs, completing work with less heavy equipment on site and helping contractors to finish their projects ahead of schedule and under budget.

High precision attainable at higher speeds
By using inertial guidance with the most responsive hydraulic control on the market, GPS performance is significantly enhanced. Machines equipped with SP technology reduce the need for rework and increase machine uptime during poor GPS/GLONASS coverage or temporary interruptions of correction signals. This allows for consistent and precise grading even under the most difficult conditions.

Increased value of existing hardware
SP technology is an available upgrade or option to the Leica PowerGrade platform. Along with the unique PowerSnap concept, which allows easy and quick exchange of machine control panels, customers have unrivaled flexibility and speed. Contractors can simply upgrade from the 2D panel to a 3D panel as the job demands or easily move panels between sites rather than losing time and money transporting machines. The cable-free snap-on/snap-off system is easy and convenient for operators, helping them work more efficiently, and now with SP technology this work is faster than ever before starting with the very first inch.

No learning curve
All dozers equipped with Leica PowerGrade and GPS can be easily updated to get the full benefit of the unique SP technology. No additional complexity is added compared to a regular control system in regards to installation or operator usage. A simple sensor swap, upgrade of software, and recalibration of the machine and SP technology is ready to go.

Availability

SP technology is available now through Global Survey

More information about Leica Geosystems’ innovative SP technology at: http://www.leica-geosystems.com/sp The newsletters are designed to better understand the feature and functions of the Real Time SmartFix Reference Station’s. Whether you are already familiar with reference stations or a relative newcomer to reference stations, the aim is that everybody will learn something from reading the news letters.

Real Time Reference Station corrections

No matter who supplies your GNSS equipment you can connect on to the SmartFix network, all that is required in a GNSS receiver capable of receiving an NTRIP (international standard) correction. For information how to connect please email info@globalsurvey.co.nz

Single Base vs Network Solution

Single Base solutions work using the same principles as the traditional Base and Rover concept. However the base is permanent and the connection is by cellular rather than radio. Single Base station corrections have a distance error component of around 1mm per km from the base station. Errors in height and position grow proportionally in relationship with distance from the base.

A Network Solution samples the corrections from a number of base stations and provides an even, consistent, high accuracy performance over the entire network region. There is no distance dependant error when working inside the network. The advantages can be seen from the in results of the test of the Waikato Network below

Recent testing of the Waikato Network Solution reported the following errors.
The nearest Base to the solution = 51km. The WORST reported spread in results where as follows, N = 0.028m, E = 0.018m, Ht = 0.043m.
With the typical spread being N= 0.015m, E = 0.015m, Ht = 0.035m.

Relative accuracy test = mean was 0.02m for position and 0.03m for ht (between known marks)

In a single Base Station solution 50Kms from the base errors would be at least in the order of 0.07m for position and 0.14m for ht.

SmartFix part of SmartNet

Leica Geosystems announces the launch of SmartNet Europe. This $33m project was funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency and North Shore City Council with construction works being undertaken by Fletcher Construction from early 2007 to November 2008.

The original Onewa Road Bridge was a two-lane structure with tight high speed turns not suited to modern traffic flows. The project involved completely removing this bridge and its approaches and replacing it with two new bridges dedicated to traffic entering and exiting the southbound lane of SH1. These bridges were built on sweeping curves to allow for safer, faster traffic flow and also included a bus lane for city bound commuters. A third bridge skirts the junction over the City of Cork beach to carry the busway unimpeded around the interchange to join the motorway south just before the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The site was well-suited to the use of both Leica GPS1200 and TPS1200 Total Stations with the two new on and off ramps designed on superelevated arcs with non-perpendicular piers.

In order to calculate and model the complex three-dimensional shape of the piers, 12d software was used to great advantage from interrogation of design drawings to supplying setout coordinates for surveyors on site. Pre-cast T-Roff girders of up to 30 metres in length were craned into position between the piers after checks and setout of each girder centreline. The bridge deck itself was modelled in 12d and then set out using Road Runner software on a Leica TCRP1203. Constant as-built surveys were undertaken throughout the project to ensure construction tolerances were being adhered to as well as monthly monitoring surveys on areas of pre-loaded fill to keep an eye on the settlement of the four new embankments.

Apart from the need to cause minimum disturbance to traffic, the construction team had to take extra special care not to disturb the habitat of resident New Zealand dotterels. Works were programmed and halted around the nesting seasons of the birds in order to ensure the endangered species had every chance of breeding successfully.

For more information about the Leica GPS1200 GPS solution or the TPS1200 Total Stations please contact Global Survey 09 478 2032

Global Awarded NZ Largest Machine Control Project

In late 2008, Global Survey was awarded NZ’s largest machine control contract to supply Leica fleet management and machine guidance solutions to Solid Energy at their Stockton coal mine north of Westport. The project involves installation of Leica’s Jigsaw 360 systems on 30 items of plant, plus installation of a wireless broadband network to cover the mine – an area of 8 x 3km. Systems installed include drill-rigs, excavators, dozers, wheel loaders, haul trucks and supervisor vehicles. Our teams have spent the last 3-4 months completing the installation of the hardware and are currently involved in commissioning and customer training.

For Solid Energy, the system will allow them to automatically schedule and optimise movements of haul trucks and excavators, improve safety when working above old underground workings and track coal movements from the pits to the stockpiles. Comprehensive reports are available in real time or at shift change to enable analysis of performance against customised KPIs. Visibility to the system is controlled by Solid Energy’s IT department, ensuring those who need to know get access to the data they need, right when they need it.

In order to map old underground workings, Solid Energy and Chris Coll Surveying have been Laser Scanning (including the Leica Scanstation and the MDL cavity scanner) to create detailed and accurate maps which are used to generate hazard zones for the Leica fleet management system.

The system is scheduled to ‘Go Live’ on June 1st, when the many stakeholders at the mine will be analysing the results for improvements in safety, operational costs and product quality.

New Rugby Lasers

Global Survey announces three new durable Leica Rugby single/dual grade lasers for general construction

With the new Leica Rugby 260SG, 270SG and 280DG Leica Geosystems extends its wide range of rugged construction lasers. The service provides real time GPS and Glonass corrections to major metropolitan, and peri-urban areas in New Zealand.

Users only need a rover system, existing bases can have a conversion kit so they can be quickly converted between a base or a rover. No base station save on field time and equipment making survey teams more mobile, and productive as they can quickly relocate to a new site, or efficiently collect small amount of data.

Feed back from our users have included such comments as. “ The accuracy achieved from the Network RTK has impressed me. At least 90% of my measurements are within 20mm”, & “Since adopting the SmartFIX service it has become an integral part of our field operations. The SmartFIX service of getting RTK corrections via the Internet is simple to use and has significantly increased the production of our field teams.”

From the proven cost savings and feedback like this, it is easy to see how subscribers have turned this service into their competitive advantage

Existing system Leica 1200 users only need to purchase a cell phone modem and a data contract to enable them to enable them to connect to the data service either on their Total Stations (via a SmartStation) or on their GPS/GNSS rover. Users of other manufacturers systems that can receive a RTCM correction can also subscribe to the SmartFIX service.

To get the competitive advantage before the system is the standard practice call Global Survey on 0800 452 737 or for more information visit http://www.globalsurvey.co.nz/shop/Survey+GPS/SmartFix+RTK+Service.html

testsetup
