Single Base and NetWork Solutions

Introduction

Welcome to the SmartFix Reference station newsletters. The newsletters are designed to better understand the feature and functions of the Real Time SmartFix Reference Station’s. Whether you are already familiar with reference stations or a relative newcomer to reference stations, the aim is that everybody will learn something from reading the news letters.

Real Time Reference Station corrections

No matter who supplies your GNSS equipment you can connect on to the SmartFix network, all that is required in a GNSS receiver capable of receiving an NTRIP (international standard) correction. For information how to connect please email info@globalsurvey.co.nz

Single Base vs Network Solution

Single Base solutions work using the same principles as the traditional Base and Rover concept. However the base is permanent and the connection is by cellular rather than radio. Single Base station corrections have a distance error component of around 1mm per km from the base station. Errors in height and position grow proportionally in relationship with distance from the base.

A Network Solution samples the corrections from a number of base stations and provides an even, consistent, high accuracy performance over the entire network region. There is no distance dependant error when working inside the network. The advantages can be seen from the in results of the test of the Waikato Network below

Recent testing of the Waikato Network Solution reported the following errors.
The nearest Base to the solution = 51km. The WORST reported spread in results where as follows, N = 0.028m, E = 0.018m, Ht = 0.043m.
With the typical spread being N= 0.015m, E = 0.015m, Ht = 0.035m.

Relative accuracy test = mean was 0.02m for position and 0.03m for ht (between known marks)

In a single Base Station solution 50Kms from the base errors would be at least in the order of 0.07m for position and 0.14m for ht.

Onewa Road Interchange Project

The Onewa Road Interchange project on Auckland’s North Shore was part of Stage 2 of the Northern Busway, a dedicated 8.7km bus route from Constellation Drive to just before the Auckland Harbour Bridge, alongside a major upgrade of the existing Onewa Road interchange to improve safety and access on and off the Northern Motorway. This $33m project was funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency and North Shore City Council with construction works being undertaken by Fletcher Construction from early 2007 to November 2008.

The original Onewa Road Bridge was a two-lane structure with tight high speed turns not suited to modern traffic flows. The project involved completely removing this bridge and its approaches and replacing it with two new bridges dedicated to traffic entering and exiting the southbound lane of SH1. These bridges were built on sweeping curves to allow for safer, faster traffic flow and also included a bus lane for city bound commuters. A third bridge skirts the junction over the City of Cork beach to carry the busway unimpeded around the interchange to join the motorway south just before the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The site was well-suited to the use of both Leica GPS1200 and TPS1200 Total Stations with the two new on and off ramps designed on superelevated arcs with non-perpendicular piers.

In order to calculate and model the complex three-dimensional shape of the piers, 12d software was used to great advantage from interrogation of design drawings to supplying setout coordinates for surveyors on site. Pre-cast T-Roff girders of up to 30 metres in length were craned into position between the piers after checks and setout of each girder centreline. The bridge deck itself was modelled in 12d and then set out using Road Runner software on a Leica TCRP1203. Constant as-built surveys were undertaken throughout the project to ensure construction tolerances were being adhered to as well as monthly monitoring surveys on areas of pre-loaded fill to keep an eye on the settlement of the four new embankments.

Apart from the need to cause minimum disturbance to traffic, the construction team had to take extra special care not to disturb the habitat of resident New Zealand dotterels. Works were programmed and halted around the nesting seasons of the birds in order to ensure the endangered species had every chance of breeding successfully.

SmartFix- Gaining a competitive advantage

Global Survey (http://www.globalsurvey.co.nz/) has been supplying GPS and Glonass position corrections via the Internet for over 12 months through the SmartFIX service (http://www.smartfix.co.nz/). The service provides real time GPS and Glonass corrections to major metropolitan, and peri-urban areas in New Zealand.

Users only need a rover system, existing bases can have a conversion kit so they can be quickly converted between a base or a rover. No base station save on field time and equipment making survey teams more mobile, and productive as they can quickly relocate to a new site, or efficiently collect small amount of data.

Feed back from our users have included such comments as. “ The accuracy achieved from the Network RTK has impressed me. At least 90% of my measurements are within 20mm”, & “Since adopting the SmartFIX service it has become an integral part of our field operations. The SmartFIX service of getting RTK corrections via the Internet is simple to use and has significantly increased the production of our field teams.”

From the proven cost savings and feedback like this, it is easy to see how subscribers have turned this service into their competitive advantage

Existing system Leica 1200 users only need to purchase a cell phone modem and a data contract to enable them to enable them to connect to the data service either on their Total Stations (via a SmartStation) or on their GPS/GNSS rover. Users of other manufacturers systems that can receive a RTCM correction can also subscribe to the SmartFIX service.

To get the competitive advantage before the system is the standard practice call Global Survey on 0800 452 737 or for more information visit http://www.globalsurvey.co.nz/shop/Survey+GPS/SmartFix+RTK+Service.html
