Single Base and NetWork Solutions

Introduction

Welcome to the SmartFix Reference station newsletters. The newsletters are designed to better understand the feature and functions of the Real Time SmartFix Reference Station’s. Whether you are already familiar with reference stations or a relative newcomer to reference stations, the aim is that everybody will learn something from reading the news letters.

Real Time Reference Station corrections

No matter who supplies your GNSS equipment you can connect on to the SmartFix network, all that is required in a GNSS receiver capable of receiving an NTRIP (international standard) correction. For information how to connect please email info@globalsurvey.co.nz

Single Base vs Network Solution

Single Base solutions work using the same principles as the traditional Base and Rover concept. However the base is permanent and the connection is by cellular rather than radio. Single Base station corrections have a distance error component of around 1mm per km from the base station. Errors in height and position grow proportionally in relationship with distance from the base.

A Network Solution samples the corrections from a number of base stations and provides an even, consistent, high accuracy performance over the entire network region. There is no distance dependant error when working inside the network. The advantages can be seen from the in results of the test of the Waikato Network below

Recent testing of the Waikato Network Solution reported the following errors.
The nearest Base to the solution = 51km. The WORST reported spread in results where as follows, N = 0.028m, E = 0.018m, Ht = 0.043m.
With the typical spread being N= 0.015m, E = 0.015m, Ht = 0.035m.

Relative accuracy test = mean was 0.02m for position and 0.03m for ht (between known marks)

In a single Base Station solution 50Kms from the base errors would be at least in the order of 0.07m for position and 0.14m for ht.

SmartFix part of SmartNet

Leica Geosystems announces the launch of SmartNet Europe. Powered by Leica GNSS Spider, SmartNet is an award winning GNSS network RTK correction service that has now been adopted in many European countries including UK, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Lithuania and parts of Spain, with many more countries relying on Leica GNSS Spider and Leica reference station installations for their commercial or private services.

Best in class RTK corrections
SmartNet Europe offers best in class quality, precision and 24/7 availability RTK corrections at a fraction of the cost of a conventional base and rover system. The subscription based service offers complete flexibility and accommodates all types and brands of RTK rovers, through the delivery of corrections in different formats, such as RTCM, Leica and CMR+.

New website
SmartNet Europe is supported by a new website that provides a hub of information related to all available networks in Europe and includes: an introduction to RTK networks and methods, a glossary of common terms and acronyms, products associated with GNSS networks and links to other SmartNet systems across the world. http://smartnet.leica-geosystems.eu/

Mark Burbidge, SmartNet Europe Manager, Leica Geosystems comments; “The new SmartNet Europe website now brings together all Leica GNSS Spider and Leica reference station installations, as a gateway to Europe. By selecting a country over the main European map a pop up will appear to describe the network RTK services in that country, together with links for further information on subscriptions. Additionally by selecting the reference station map link, a Google map showing every Leica reference station will appear which currently includes over 1000 sites!”

Valued added services
SmartNet is built on the powerful Leica GNSS Spider networking software that provides a variety of real-time products; including Leica MAX (based on the RTCM Master Auxiliary Concept) the first and only International Network RTK standard, i-MAX, Virtual Reference Stations and FKP. SmartNet also offers a number of value added services including RINEX and Smart or Virtual RINEX downloads, an on-line computation service, using Leica Geo Office, Network Monitoring using Leica GNSS QC or even the new Leica CrossCheck service.

SmartNet Worldwide
Although dedicated to European services, the website is not limited to Europe alone. A World Nets link is also available to access many other Leica enabled services across the world, including: Canada, Philippines, Singapore, Australia, Bahrain, New Zealand and multiple services in the US.
